Kye Kye being held by her brother Kamal, with her sister Khadija before Encephalitis struck

On the 1st March 2002, Raquaya was rushed to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, as I was unable to wake her. Previous to this she had be displaying typical cold/flu symptoms. However, it was soon established that Raquaya was in a coma.

For several weeks Kye Kye (Raquaya's nickname) remained on a life support machine in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, until by the grace of God, she was able to maintain her own breathing and was brought back to us.

As the weeks grew longer, and after numerous tests, the pictures of what had happened to my baby had become very dark. I was soon to learn that my beautiful baby girl had acquired severe brain damage.

This resulted in her being left with Choreoathetoid Cerebral Palsy (meaning that Kye Kye could no longer control movement), Global Development delay, visual impairment, and the need for Naso-Gastric feeding (Kye Kye was unable to swallow, and so had to be fed via a tube inserted through her nose directly into her stomach). I was then told that all of this was irreversible (according to the experts!)
