It had been more than a year since the fund-raising for the journey to Cuba began, and in January 2004 the trip was finally made possible. We received the support and contribution of a number of organisations, including Virgin Airlines, the Cumberland Hotel, The Voice Newspaper, The Edgware/Harrow/Wembley Gazette, and a number of local radio stations, as well as support from family, friends and well-wishers.

I had great reservations when embarking on this journey, as I had read and heard a lot of negative ideas about Cuba and its nationals. Many questions were asked of me: what is available in Cuba? Considering that it is a Third World country, what could they have to offer? However I focussed on the facts, Kye Kye needed treatment and Cuba could provide it.

Kye Kye and I were shown a warmth and love from the people of Cuba that made us feel welcomed and very much at home. Her therapy consisted of intense daily therapy starting at 9 am and finishing at 5:30 pm. The staff were very dedicated and showed great hope and enthusiasm when working with Raquaya. They never doubted her ability to achieve higher goals, even when I was unsure of how much she could take. This positive approach was very encouraging for me and I am sure Kye Kye felt this too.
